Dental emergency is generally a tooth problem that causes moderate to severe pain. Dental treatment is needed to alleviate pain. Depending on the severity of the situation, antibiotics maybe prescribed in the first instance.
What helps unbearable tooth pain?
Over the counter medications such as Ibuprofen (Nurofen) and Paracetamol can assist moderate to severe tooth pain. Using numbing pastes or gels, often with bezocaine (Kenalog in Orabase, Oral Eze) can also assist to lessen the discomfort.

Tips for dealing with a toothache before you get treated
- Apply a cold compress over the area
- Ensure you don’t play with the affected tooth or teeth while applying the compress or pack.
- Use a toothbrush or floss to help remove any food that may be stuck between the teeth
- Rinse your mouth with warm water
- Over the counter pain relief medication may help too.
