WHY IS PREVENTION IMPORTANT?
Oral Health for Overall Health
Proper oral hygiene does not only prevent caries and periodontal disease but also affects our overall health and well-being.
PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN TREATMENT
While fillings are a simple and effective way to deal with tooth decay, as with many things in life, it’s better to prevent problems from occurring whenever possible.
- The key to avoiding fillings is to maintain good oral hygiene by caring for your teeth and gums on a regular basis and getting your teeth checked by a dental professional every six months – or as recommended.
- You should brush your teeth at least twice a day, using a toothpaste that contains fluoride. The ideal time to brush your teeth is about 30 minutes after a meal.
The proper method for brushing your teeth is holding your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle against the gum line and focusing on each individual tooth as you move the brush in small circular movements. Be sure you cover all surfaces of your teeth and consider setting a timer – a thorough brushing should take at least two minutes.
It’s also a good idea to replace your toothbrush every two to three months – many have bristles that change colour as they’re used to let you know when they need to be replaced.
- Flossing is another important part of preventing tooth decay and the need for dental fillings, so you should be sure to floss at least once a day between each of your teeth.
- Other things that can help you avoid the need for dental fillings include using a mouthwash containing fluoride and maintaining a healthy diet. Foods and beverages like sweets, fizzy drinks, chocolate, fruit juice and white bread can all increase your risk of tooth decay.
These issues, and more, can be discussed with your dentist during your regular examination. Dentists and dental hygienists can also demonstrate the correct methods of brushing and flossing to help ensure you’re doing it correctly.
